The exit

First 30 minutes — headland funneling, wind-over-tide chop

On the 40

Every wave announces itself. The bows hobby-horse briskly — five, six degrees — and you steer braced with your thighs. Conversation happens between gusts. Loose cushions get tucked away, the laptop is already stowed, and somebody is guarding the fruit bowl.
