I am working on an aluminum catamaran design where the parts can be made by a big shipyard in Asia and packed efficiently into a standard 40 foot container and shipped to some local smaller shipyard in the Caribbean, or near a customer anywhere, and put together quickly. The hull sections pack inside each other like cups, so we think we can pack a 78 foot catamaran parts in a 40 foot container. We might start smaller, like 60 feet, for the first one. The parts will be thicker than normal catamarans (maybe 12 to 15 mm thick) and not have much internal supports. The parts are frustums (sections of cones) so nearly pipe shapes with no compound curves. It will be very light compared to other 78 foot boats as the living area is just for 2 people. We estimate 45,000 lbs of aluminum and total loaded weight like 55,000 lbs for the 78 foot one. We expect to make lots of these over time. I am thinking to use a naval architect firm and shipyard in either Singapore or Vietnam. Please recommend some. I would like one with: 1) known to do naval architecture work for outside design ideas 2) reputation for ethical behavior - no or minimal disputes or cases of stealing designs 3) reasonably low cost and quick turn around 4) I have a preference for private firms rather than state owned 5) prefer English speaking an English contracts For each NA firm please estimate the costs and time for: 1) Initial viability of concept evaluation 2) Basic design 3) Detailed design with manufacturing specifications 4) Legal paperwork package for registration, insurance, class, etc For shipyards we want 1) low cost per lbs of aluminum (maybe China, Vietnam, South Korea, Tiawan, - any country you like better?) 2) no or minimal cases of stealing designs 3) Prefer shipyard that uses lots of robotics in manufacturing and welding for consistent results in mass production Estimated manufacturing costs per lbs of aluminum for just aluminum parts for first prototype and for batches of 20 at a time for each shipyard location.
