I am working on a catamaran or platform design that by nesting hull or column sections together can fit into a 40 foot shipping container. I think we can get a nice aluminum catamaran or platform design that ships in a container. We might make the main hulls/structure/platform parts in China and then have a Caribbean shipyard put it together and add living area on top. It would be great if there was at least an option for a living area that we could also fit in the container with the hulls and structure. I am wondering about having an inflatable structure for the living area. There are a number things that are kind of related to this: 1) glamping bubble tents / inflatable cabin 2) air domes 3) airbeam tents / air-framed tents 4) air-pillar structures 5) air-supported buildings 6) Pneumocell “Pneumo Planet” 7) Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) - not house but it works in salt water and lasts a long time even in Caribbean 8) Inflatable life rafts & marine evacuation slides - again not same but marine 9) Air-supported spheres to protect radar on ships - not sure what the largest of these is 10) Inflatable space habitats - living structure that withstands vacuum and radiation of space 11) Milirary airbeam shelters - like https://bladedefenseco.com/ 12) ETFE air cushions 13) Geodesic domes + architectural membranes Are there other things that might be more related? We are thinking of a platform around 40 feet by 40 feet but making a structure 40 foot in diameter would be reasonable too. Are any of these suitable for long term use? Are there designs that have multiple layers or parts that give some insulation? The Caribbean is a bit warm (not crazy hot) and will have lots of solar power on our vessel so plan on air conditioning, but at least some sort of insulation will be needed. Are there any of these that are strong enough that they could handle 30 MPH winds and 40 MPH gusts? Do any seems like they could handle things like a bit of salt spray? Even if none of the existing products suits our needs, does it seem like something could be designed that would fit our needs? Any idea how much such a design might cost? Or what a custom extra strong 40 foot diameter structure might cost if we ordered 20 from China? We will have storage room in the alluminum hulls. For storm conditions we could take down the inflatable structure and store it away. The humans could hide out in the hulls as well. It may be that a geodesic dome kit is better for my needs. The beams could pack well and then some flexible tent like thing could be stretched over it. Do you think a fixed dome structure is a clear win or does inflatible still have some advantages? This inflatable does not seem great for putting solar on top, though perhaps a lightweight flexible solar panel could work.
