How they actually feel to live, walk, eat, and work aboard while island-hopping the Caribbean

A 78-foot catamaran is not “a bigger 40-footer.” Length nearly doubles, beam typically jumps from about 21–23 ft to 35–42 ft, and interior volume often increases by a factor of six to ten. Displacement, inertia, and wave-filtering change dramatically. The result is a different kind of vessel: one still feels like a boat connected to the sea; the other often feels like a quiet floating apartment or small hotel.

Caribbean conditions matter. Between islands you commonly see 15–25 knot trade winds and 3–6 ft (sometimes more) wind waves or short chop. In lagoons, behind reefs, or in settled bays, both boats sit calmly—but the space and motion you experience remain very different. Specific hulls, bridgedeck clearance, loading, and whether the boat is a lightweight performance cat or a heavy luxury platform will shift the numbers, but the scale difference below is consistent across typical designs.

Solar-electric cats add a twist: larger deck area usually means far more solar and battery capacity, so the 78-footer can more easily support air-conditioning, watermakers, office gear, and hotel loads without feeling energy-constrained. A 40-footer can be fully solar too, but you manage power more carefully.

Walking around

40 ft: From the cockpit to the bow you typically cross trampolines or a relatively narrow foredeck. Side decks are usable but not generous. Underway in trade-wind chop you naturally keep a hand on a rail, bimini frame, or coachroof. Going below, companionway steps are steep. Inside, you turn sideways in the galley; two people in the salon is fine, four starts to feel busy. At night or in a squall you move deliberately. Analogies: a well-designed studio apartment that is also a vehicle on a washboard road.

78 ft: Decks are wide enough to walk two abreast. Many boats have a solid or semi-solid foredeck, a large flybridge, and multiple staircases that feel closer to a house than a companionway. You can carry a laptop, a tray, or a camera without a “passage plan.” Interiors often include a full-width salon, a separate dining area, and cabins with real circulation space. Underway in the same seas, people wander with coffee. Analogy: a luxury penthouse with a slow elevator—you still know you are on the water, but you do not constantly negotiate the boat.

In a flat lagoon both are easy. The difference shows as soon as there is residual swell or a ferry wake: the 40-footer rocks you onto your toes; the 78-footer mostly ignores it.

Eating

40 ft: Breakfast and dinner usually happen in the cockpit (best breeze) or around a salon table that seats 6–8 tightly. The galley is a one- or two-person workspace. In a lively seaway, plates need non-skid, drinks get lids, and cooking one-pot meals is the practical choice. Guests help by staying out of the cook’s way. It is sociable and “yachtie”—everyone is in the same small volume.

78 ft: You may have flybridge dining, a cockpit that seats a dozen, an indoor table that does not feel like camping, and a galley closer to a residential kitchen (sometimes with a cook). Motion is low enough that you can serve wine in glasses and eat composed plates while crossing from St. Martin to Antigua in typical trades. People can eat in different places at once (kids in the cockpit, someone working through lunch in the salon). It feels less like “boat food” and more like living ashore, except with a 360° view.

Protected waters: both are pleasant. The 40-footer still feels like a boat picnic; the 78-footer can feel like a waterfront restaurant with your own chef’s kitchen.

Working on computers

This is where size and motion matter most for digital nomads, remote workers, or anyone on video calls.

40 ft: In a quiet anchorage, a salon table or cabin desk is fine. Underway, short-period pitching makes prolonged typing and mouse work tiring; some people get queasy looking at a screen. You choose a leeward seat, wedge yourself in, and often pause when the boat hits a set of waves. Power is usually adequate for laptops and Starlink on a well-designed solar 40-footer, but you still think about loads (air-con vs. electronics). Noise from waves on the hulls is closer and more present. A good day: morning work in a lagoon, passage in the afternoon with the laptop stowed. A hard day: 20 knots on the nose and a bouncing cursor.

78 ft: The platform is stable enough that many people work full days on passage. You can have a real desk, dual monitors, and a quiet corner. Video calls look professional; you are not visibly rolling. Larger solar arrays and battery banks make “always-on” networking, cooling, and office equipment realistic. You can walk away from the screen, get lunch, and come back without the boat having thrown everything on the floor. Seasickness from screen work is much less common because accelerations are lower.

Rule of thumb: if your work requires hours of focused screen time while moving between islands, the 78-footer is in a different category. If you mostly work at anchor and treat passages as travel days, a well-set-up 40-footer is entirely usable.

Between islands vs. in a protected area

Passages (e.g. Virgin Islands to St. Martin, or Grenada to the Grenadines in trades): On the 40-footer the sea is the main character. You hear hull slap, feel the bows lift, and adjust your stance. Sleeping in a sea berth is normal; cooking is simplified; laptops stay in cases unless conditions are kind. On the 78-footer the same 4–5 ft seas often become background. People continue conversations, cook normally, and treat the trip as a scenic transfer. You still reef, watch squalls, and respect weather—the boat is not magic—but daily life does not stop.

Protected water (Bahamas banks, Tobago Cays, a mangrove creek, a settled bay): Both are comfortable. The 40-footer feels closer to nature: you hear fish, feel a small roll from a passing dinghy, and live in one or two main social spaces. The 78-footer feels like a resort villa: separate cabins with real doors, indoor climate control if you want it, space for guests not to be on top of each other, and decks large enough for yoga or a workshop. The tradeoff is practical: a 78-footer draws more attention, needs more swinging room, may not fit every snug hurricane hole or shallow cut, and is slower/more expensive to berth.

Solar, power, and “hotel” comfort

Solar area scales roughly with length × beam. A 40-foot solar cat might carry on the order of a few kilowatts of panels and a modest battery bank—enough for efficient electric propulsion at displacement speeds, lights, fridge, watermaker in sun, and laptops, with careful management. A 78-footer can carry much larger arrays (often well into double-digit kW) plus huge battery capacity, so air-conditioning, multiple fridges, laundry, office gear, and hotel loads can run without the same anxiety. Electric propulsion on the larger boat still needs respect for range and sun, but the living load is easier to hide.

Quietness: both solar-electric cats are far quieter than diesel cruisers. The 78-footer usually feels even more isolated from wave noise because of mass, insulation, and distance from the hull sides to the seating areas.

Which feel do you want?

Choose the 40-footer if you want to remain connected to sailing, keep costs and draft modest, sneak into smaller spots, and treat passages as part of the adventure. It is still a very comfortable way to see the Caribbean compared with a monohull of similar length, especially for walking (level platform, little heel) and for solar living at a simpler scale.

Choose the 78-footer if the priority is living and working as if you had a waterfront home that happens to move: space to walk without thinking, dining that does not stop in a seaway, and computer work that survives a trade-wind crossing. You pay for that in purchase price, dockage, maintenance, and sometimes the need for crew or more involved systems.

Neither is “right.” They deliver two different Caribbean experiences: one is a capable, intimate cruising cat; the other is a stable, spacious solar residence that uses the islands as a changing backdrop.
