Aluminum Catamaran — Singapore / Vietnam / China Vendor & Cost ROM
Important: This is a preliminary, non-endorsement market scan and rough order-of-magnitude (ROM) estimate.
It is not legal, procurement, class, or tax advice. There is no public ranking for “ethical behavior” or
“design theft” risk. You must verify every firm by references, court/arbitration searches, NDAs, IP assignments,
audit rights, and staged payments. Costs vary widely with vessel size, class, flag, quantity, aluminum weight,
outfitting scope, and yard backlog.
Assumptions Used
Vessel: approximately 12–18 m aluminum catamaran, designed for containerized shipping in a standard 40 ft container.
Production: first prototype, then batches of about 20 units at a time.
Currency: USD, 2024–2025 ROM. Excludes taxes, duties, travel, currency hedging, major class fees if not stated, and escalation.
Manufacturing scope: aluminum structure only — material, CNC cutting, forming, fit-up, welding, dimensional QC, and primer. It excludes engines, electrical, interior, paint topcoat, systems, class survey, transport, and import/export costs unless noted.
Robotics: full robotic welding is uncommon for small custom boat production. Most aluminum yards use CNC cutting, semi-automatic MIG/TIG, and some automated panel welding. China’s larger aluminum yards are more likely to have robotic/automatic panel lines, but IP and quality control must be managed.
Recommended Candidate Shortlist
The firms below are commonly shortlisted in this segment. Inclusion is not an endorsement. “Ethics” and “design theft”
claims must be checked independently. For Vietnam and China, use English + local-language contracts, Singapore or SIAC
arbitration where possible, and strong IP clauses.

Vetting notes
Austal Vietnam / Austal Asia
Vietnam: Vung Tau; Australia HQ
Integrated design + build
Aluminum high-speed craft, catamarans/trimarans, large production experience, English-speaking, private ASX-listed group, advanced manufacturing.
May prefer larger orders. Confirm appetite for 12–18 m containerized catamaran and batch-of-20 economics. Check IP firewalls if using external designer.
Verify aluminum catamaran experience. Many Vietnam yards focus on steel, offshore, or tugs rather than small aluminum catamarans.
Seatrium / ST Engineering Marine / SBIC yards
Singapore / Vietnam
Large shipyards, often government-linked
Large capacity, class experience, Singapore legal environment.
Your preference is private firms. These are government-linked or state-owned. They may also be too large for small containerized catamarans.
Best practical structure: Use a Singapore-based naval architect with catamaran experience (e.g. Incat Crowther, SeaTech, BMT)
for concept/basic/detailed design and IP control, then build at a private Vietnam yard such as Austal Vietnam or Strategic Marine Vietnam.
If you want the naval architect and yard under one company, start with Austal Vietnam and Strategic Marine.
Design, Engineering and Legal Cost & Time ROM
Ranges are for a 12–18 m aluminum catamaran. If integrated with a yard, some design cost may be bundled into the build price.
If your vessel is larger, classed for passenger service, or intended for EU/US markets, move to the upper end or higher.

Aluminum Manufacturing Cost per lb — Structure Only
Definition: “Per lb” below means USD per pound of finished aluminum structure — material, cutting, forming, fit-up,
welding, dimensional QC, and primer. It excludes NRE/tooling, engines, electrical, interior, final paint, systems,
class survey, transport, and duties. If material is supplied by you, subtract roughly $2.50–$5.00/lb.
If you want a fully outfitted vessel, multiply by roughly 2–4× depending on systems.

Notes
Singapore major/commercial yards
$25–$50 / lb
$15–$30 / lb
High labor and overhead. Minimum charges can dominate small orders. Best for quality, English contracts, and financing/legal certainty.
Vietnam major/foreign-linked yards
$15–$32 / lb
$8–$18 / lb
Best cost/quality balance for many aluminum boats. Verify welding quality, class experience, and IP controls. Batch tooling can reduce unit cost significantly.
China major aluminum yards
$10–$24 / lb
$6–$14 / lb
Lowest cost, but quality, IP protection, English contract enforcement, and class consistency vary. Use strong audit, NDA, and stage-gate QC.
Robotics and Mass-Production Questions to Ask Yards
Do you use CNC plasma, waterjet, or laser cutting for aluminum plate and extrusions?
Do you have automated panel welding, friction stir welding, or robotic MIG/TIG lines?
Can you share weld procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder qualifications?
Do you use digital jigs, laser scanning, or 3D tolerance checks between hulls?
What is your first-article inspection process for a new design?
Can you lock in repeatable fixture numbers and process sheets for a 20-unit batch?
What is your scrap/rework rate on aluminum high-speed craft?
Can you provide class-approved welders for ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, Bureau Veritas, or RINA?
Ethics, IP and Design-Theft Due Diligence
No public ranking exists. Check Singapore, Vietnam, China court records, SIAC/CIETAC/HKIAC arbitration news, local press, and industry references.
Use strong contracts: NDA, IP assignment, work-for-hire, non-use/non-disclosure, no-compete for this design, audit rights, and return/destruction of CAD data.
Control the CAD: watermark files, release only need-to-know assemblies, use a secure data room, and keep the complete design escrowed with a lawyer.
Stage payments: pay against deliverables and milestone acceptance, not time. Include holdback for warranty and IP compliance.
Governing law: Singapore law and SIAC arbitration are often practical for Singapore/Vietnam/China contracts. Use bilingual contracts for Vietnam/China.
Class in parallel: engage ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, Bureau Veritas, or RINA early to review the design and reduce rework.
Physical security: control access to the build bay, restrict cameras, and serial-number major parts.
Reference checks: ask for two customers whose designs were built by the yard and ask specifically about IP, change orders, quality, and on-time delivery.
Practical Recommendation
Design/IP owner: Singapore naval architect — Incat Crowther, SeaTech, or BMT. Budget $160k–$500k and 7–15 months for full design + legal/class package.
Build yard: Private Vietnam yard — Austal Vietnam or Strategic Marine Vietnam. Budget $15–$32/lb prototype and $8–$18/lb at 20-unit batches for aluminum structure.
Alternative integrated route: Austal Vietnam or Strategic Marine for design+build. Faster contracting, but confirm IP ownership and external-design rights.
China route: Only if you have strong on-site QC, audit rights, and IP controls. Budget $10–$24/lb prototype and $6–$14/lb at batch 20, but expect higher IP and consistency risk.
